Learning Objectives

  • Follow established guidelines for basic emergency airway management

  • Learn to effectively use a BVM and LMA for emergency airway management
  • Develop emergency airway management skills through hands-on simulation skills sessions
  •
Demonstrate competency in emergency airway management
  • Apply knowledge of the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of sedative and analgesic agents for selection of appropriate drug, dose and dosing interval to achieve moderate sedation.
  • Demonstrate appropriate use of reversal agents in patients when patients show signs of over sedation.

Description

The HealthCare Simulation South Carolina (HCSSC) Moderate Sedation set of scenarios was designed to be used with the HCSSC Moderate Sedation course. The scenarios provide formative and summative assessment with structured feedback for participants using sedative and analgesic agents to achieve moderate sedation. The 24 scenarios within the Moderate Sedation set include (the numbering refers to the sections of the Moderate Sedation course):

Titration practice:

IIIB-1 Practice Instructor Demo Normal
IIIB-2 Practice Resistant
IIIB-3 Practice Sensitive
IIIB-4 Practice Normal
IIIB-5 Practice Normal
IIIB-6 Practice Very Sensitive
IIIB-7 Practice Resistant

Response to procedure stimulus practice:

IIIC-1 Procedural Stimulus Normal
IIIC-2 Procedural Stimulus Sensitive
IIIC-3 Procedural Stimulus

Reversal Practice:

IVC-1 Reversal
IVC-2 Reversal
IVC-3 Reversal
IVC-4 Reversal
IVC-5 Reversal
IVC-6 Reversal

Testing:

VI-3 Titration Test Resistant
VI-4 Titration Test Sensitive
VI-5 Reversal Test
VI-6 Reversal Test

Baseline:

I-1 Baseline Titration Test Resistant
I-2 Baseline Titration Test Sensitive
I-3 Baseline Reversal Test
I-4 Baseline Reversal Test

The Moderate Sedation course was also created with the intention that participants would complete the Basic Emergency Airway Management (BEAM) scenario set prior to the Moderate Sedation scenario set, but due to manikin limitations the BEAM scenarios are currently only available in certain software platforms. The BEAM difficult airway management scenarios require a modification to the manikin airway. At the present time only older model manikins can be modified to perform the BEAM set adequately, in which instructions are included with the set up and equipment documentation. HCSSC is currently in the process of testing new methods to allow airway modifications to all Laerdal manikins.

All of the scenarios in the Moderate Sedation set have been developed for several software platforms. Each version of the scenario takes full advantage of Laerdal programming capabilities. As a result, the scenarios are easily run from a well-structured menu. Debriefing logs include color-coded check marks to provide easy-to follow, objective-based debriefing guides. In addition, multimedia is embedded throughout the scenarios to provide enhanced fidelity and “just-in-time” participant feedback.

All scenarios in this set can be found in SimStore™. Search for HealthCare Simulation South Carolina Moderate Sedation. HCSSC scenarios are programmed to support proven methods for objective-based feedback and Practical Simulation. It gives a customer the right to use a scenario product for an unlimited period of time and for an unlimited number of times. If an update is made to the product, customers with a Capital License will receive the update if it falls within one year from the purchase date. After that timeframe, the customer will keep the existing version of the product without future updates. In addition, Customer Service will support a Capital License for a period of one year from the purchase date.

Annual License: An Annual License is typically purchased from the customer’s operating budget. It gives a customer the right to use a scenario product for a Period of one year from the purchase date, for an unlimited number of times. If an update is made to the product, customers with a valid Annual License will receive the update. Customer Service will support an Annual License as long as it is active. At the end of the Annual License period, customers will receive a message from SimStore, alerting them to their expiring license and providing instruction on how to extend the license.
