Additional Information

Description

This scenario focuses on treatment of a patient with unstable wide-complex tachycardia (reentry SVT) with a heart rate of 180/min. To be successful, the learners should follow the Tachycardia With a Pulse Algorithm, identify the type of tachycardia, and deliver 2 synchronized shocks to correct the tachycardia. Administration of antiarrhythmics or an unsynchronized shock will lead to VF, which will require a single unsynchronized shock to correct.

The scenario addresses major learning objectives geared toward basic and advanced care of a patient with a cardiopulmonary emergency. The simulation scenario encourages the participants to assess and manage the patient while presenting key indicators to be identified and allowing critical interventions to be performed. The scenario contains timed events that require critical actions to take place in a timely manner to successfully complete the scenario.

The learning objectives and case study have been developed to focus on the learning objectives from the ACLS Provider and the ACLS for Experienced Providers Courses and reflect treatment based on the 2015 American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC.

Although geared toward the ACLS Course, the scenario can be used in a variety of settings where assessment and management of critical cardiopulmonary emergencies are priorities. To maximize learning outcomes and for ease of use the scenario includes:

• Learning objectives related to general management, monitoring and investigation, algorithm-based treatment, and team dynamics
• Equipment list and setup guide
• Learner brief
• A list of proposed correct treatment and a flow diagram presenting an overview of the scenario progression
• Guided reflection questions mapped to learning objectives and to the GAS Debriefing Tool.
• Case considerations with scenario-relevant algorithms included
• Scenario programming with automatic and manual events with associated comments, resulting in a detailed annotated log file being generated during simulation

The scenario is designed for use with a wide range of Laerdal simulators and is compatible with SimPad Automatic Mode, SimPad PLUS Automatic Mode, and LLEAP Automatic Mode.
