Description
This National League for Nursing core scenario presents a sickle cell anemia (HbSS) patient in acute pain. The scenario is applicable for all types of undergraduate nursing programs and is designed to encourage participants to assess and manage the patient, identify and prioritize patient problems, and perform key interventions for safe and effective patient care. This National League for Nursing scenario offers faculty the ability to provide realistic and challenging scenario-based simulation to help learners apply the nursing process. The core scenario requires patient assessment, skin care, pain management and safe patient handling.
The scenario is a timed event that requires critical actions to take place in a timely manner to successfully complete the scenario. In this scenario, the student will be expected to provide education on alternative pain management strategies, identify the need for incentive spirometry, and provide patient education on preventing respiratory complications.
The learning objectives and case study have been developed to provide a high degree of fidelity within the simulation, address different levels of complexity, and facilitate the post simulation debriefing. As a resource for the instructor/facilitator, the scenario includes the detailed nursing diagnosis that the student is expected to identify during the simulation, as well as a debriefing guide utilizing the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies. The scenario also includes a list of the clinical experiences simulated, tracked and matched toward the 2010 NCLEX-RN Test Plan Categories.
The case is developed for several of the Laerdal software platforms. The simulators respond to clinical interventions and this case is based on actual physiological models providing the instructor with an easy access to adjust the level of complexity, thereby making the case suitable for both experienced and less experienced learners.
